You Have Been Tricked into Thinking it's Healthy

Bottled water is another great example of slick marketing and corporate bullying. Corporations have taken something as simple and clean as water and created an industry with massive effects on health, climate, pollution and even oil.


But Bottled Water is Healthier - Right?

This is usually a NO!

Bottled water is frequently no healthier for you than tap water and sometimes it is even more contaminated.

As of 2008, Americans were drinking almost 10 billion gallons of bottled water each year and at a price of $3.79 per gallon (1900 times more than tap water). But for all this money consumers were not getting a product that was really any better than the much cheaper tap water.

A study done by the Environmental Working Group found bottled water brands filled with chemicals and toxic by-products. Out of 10 brands of water tested, all were found to have some sort of chemical contamination. These chemicals included such things as:

  • Hexane
  • Octane
  • Fluoride
  • chloroform
  • dichloroacetic acid
  • arsenic
  • toluene
  • and the list goes on and on...

These chemicals and toxins come from places like:

  • disinfection byproducts
  • heavy metals
  • solvents
  • plasticizers

... and they make bottled water no better than tap water. The FDA regulations are not able to ensure a quality with bottled water that consumers are expecting.

Even the EPA has this to say,

Whether it travels through a pipe to your home or comes packaged in a bottle... all our drinking water comes from similar sources, either from sources we can see, such as rivers and lakes, or from sources we can't see, such as underground aquifers (EPA 2005a).

The Plastic Bottles only Add to the Harmful Effects

The water inside the bottle, no matter how pure, can be affected by the plastic bottle is comes in. Many plastics contain chemicals like bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalates.

These chemicals can leach out of the plastic and into your water, especially when they are exposed to heat and sunlight.

These chemicals can cause a multitude of health problems including...

  • Obesity and Fat retention
  • Reduced Immune functions
  • Hyperactivity and Aggressiveness
  • Brain Damage
  • Increase chance of Prostate Cancer

Water Bottles are Hazardous to Environmental Health

Plastic Water Bottles have become a major environmental threat. And it's not just the obvious trash along the highway or overflowing landfill. Just look at a few of the environmental problems created by the bottled water industry...

  • Processing the 1.5 million tons of plastic releases toxic compounds into the environment
  • Manufacturing that much plastic releases more than 800,000 metric tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, contributing to global climate change.
  • It takes 1.5 million barrels of oil for just the U.S. to make plastic water bottles.
  • The oil used to make plastic bottles just for the state of New York is equal to 66 million gallons of gasoline; enough to power 120,000 automobiles for a year.
  • Discarded bottles are a major source of oceanic pollution.
  • Every square mile of the ocean has 46,000 pieces of floating plastic in it.
  • The plastic has even become a part of the food chain - not only for animals, but we as humans are consuming minute levels of plastics from our food sources. These plastics are toxic to life!
  • The corporations involved with bottled water are threatening local water supplies and underground aquifers with aggressive pumping.
  • Only 1 in of every 6 plastic bottles used actually gets recycled.
  • An estimated 2,480,000 tons of plastic bottles and jars were disposed of in 2008.

The Solution

Bottled water is not better for you. It has been shown to have toxins in it. The plastic bottle it sits in just adds to the chemicals that you are drinking. It costs $4 a gallon if you get the cheap stuff. Making the bottles takes a ton of oil, produces toxic by-products and the bottles pollute our world especially the oceans.

But what else can we do. I mean the whole reason corporations were able to create this crazy industry was by praying on the fears people had over toxins in tap water.

So we are all looking for a cleaner, safer and better water to drink.

Filtered water is a great choice. There are filters big enough to handle your entire house and small enough to fit on your counter or in your 'fridge.

If you have the ability to get a whole house filter that is the best choice because it removes the contaminants from even the water you wash and shower with. You would be amazed at how many toxins and chemicals can pass through your skin and cause biological damage.

Look for a whole house filter that has 3 stages:

  • Removes sediment
  • Removes chlorine and heavy metals
  • Has a good carbon filter for removing chemicals and other toxins
